- Conservative investors have really become the sacrificial lamb of the Federal Reserve low interest rate policy. People typically don’t do the math to see where they are on a real return basis. By the time they realize they aren’t keeping up with inflation, folks can potentially get further and further behind.
- Two common misconceptions of investors:
- Ignore inflation because consumer prices have risen only 2.4% per year since 2000.
- Financial markets are so sophisticated they automatically adjust for inflation expectations.
- Annual inflation of 2.4% becomes 38% in 14 years!
- If the price of stock goes up and inflation goes up by the same amount, then you are not really better off. If the rate of inflation is higher than the asset’s appreciation, you are worse off!
- Inflation is particularly important for retirees. With tiny interest rates, it is difficult for seniors to find a low-risk investment outside the stock market that will grow faster than inflation.
- Harvard Professor David Collander worries that “stocks have moved too far too fast since bottoming out in 2009 and are entering a new bubble.”
- The Dow has returned to an inflation-adjusted record after a bear market ONLY FOUR TIMES since 1899.
